Backcountry Skiing in the Pyrenees

Personal log of a novice backcountry skier in his backyard

Eguzkizko Muñoa (Nafarroa) – 28 February 2013

The Eguzki (as it is commonly called) is the closest 1000m summit to Donosti, just over a 30 minute drive from the city. I had heard about it but never done it, and during winters like this one, with plenty of snow starting at 300m above sea level, it gets very popular. So today I decided to give it a go. Plenty of cars parked at the starting point and not much visibility… although it improved fast. The uphill was quite nice and easier than the Saioa, but the snow was probably the worst I’ve seen in ages: a mix of crust and super heavy soup. After a few attemps to ski down following the main route, I decided to walk down with my skis on the back as the potential for blowing a knee was quite high. It was a shame as with nice corn there are lots of possibilities in the area. Maybe some other day.
