Personal log of a novice backcountry skier in his backyard
What a complete whiteout!! It’s sunny and windy down at Esterri but the mountains are covered in clouds. I take my time to see if it improves, but a couple of hours later when I reach Bonaigua it’s a complete whiteout. Zero visibility, lots of wind and even driving is hazardous. I stop to chat with Javier, a guy who lives in Esterri and who said he might be coming with me, but we quickly agree that it’s a no-go.
I keep driving down into the Val d’Aran. I spot a few tree lines next to the road, but there’s nowhere to stop anywhere near them and the road is quite busy. 3 hours later -under the rain – I’m back at home in Donosti. As in surfing, nature always has the last word. The Tuc dera Cigalera will have to wait. Until when? Who knows, there’s still a good 3-4 weeks of backcountry skiing left unless April goes really warm. So far the forecast for this week is quite stormy, with a succession of fronts passing over us in Donosti and on to the mountains. The forecast is for snow above 1200m for -at least- the next 2 days.
Let’s hit the waves while keeping an eye on the mountains!
